All you need to know about this year’s Advent Gingerbread Arts Exhibition in the Abbey of Zwettl

This year marks the 17th year of our exhibition history. In spite of this year’s motto “Back to the Beginning” there is quite a number of innovations to be discovered in our Gingerbread and Gingerbread Arts Exhibition 2011.

Why “Back to the Beginning”? A considerable number of our visitors to the 16th Advent Exhibition called it desirable that we turn to more down-to-earth, regional objects, even to more playful topics, more fairytale, more Hänsel & Gretel (the famous tale of two children who got lost in the woods). So this is what we bore in mind when we started planning this year’s exhibition.

The choice of gingerbread houses for this year is accomplished. Most of the stencils for the new models are drawn. In order to achieve an even better ripened gingerbread dough we have moved forward the date for its preparation to July. It is now in its resting and ripening process.

The regular nucleus of house models of every year is being enriched this time by a new farm house, a little chapel in the woods, a house for beehives and a shingle-roof house. You will also see the gingerbread house designed by Erwin Pröll, the head of our Lower Austrian government, and a pretty spectacular bird house. In addition we will build a copy of an old gingerbread house of Central Austria, the parts of which were not glued but tied together by red and golden ribbons. It will be one of this year’s two special Christmas Houses. The other will be a copy from the front page of a traditional Advent Calendar.

As a matter of fact we have taken quite a few things in hand to see sparkling eyes in this year’s Advent Exhibition.

Most of the gingerbread house models will again be available at the colorful wooden booth outside of the exhibition. This holds true also for the special gingerbread creations. We have added a few new ones this year. There will again be a tall Christmas tree beside the entrance to the exhibition, newly decorated this year. All the items of the new decoration will also be available at the wooden fairytale house beside the entrance.
